Euronext Halts CoinShares Zcash ETP Over Settlement Issues
Euronext suspended CoinShares' Zcash ETP before its debut, citing unresolved operational settlement requirements at the central securities depository level.
A planned milestone for crypto exchange-traded products in Europe hit an unexpected snag when Euronext moved to suspend CoinShares' Zcash ETP before it could even begin trading. The exchange cited "operational settlement requirements" as the reason, signaling that the infrastructure underpinning the product was not yet ready to support live transactions.
At the center of the delay is the central securities depository, or CSD — the back-end institution responsible for holding securities and processing the transfer of ownership when trades occur. Euronext indicated the halt will remain in place until the CSD is fully equipped to handle settlement operations for the product. In traditional and digital asset markets alike, settlement failures represent a systemic risk, which explains why exchanges take a conservative posture when these conditions are not met.

The suspension raises broader questions about the operational readiness of European market infrastructure to accommodate the growing wave of crypto ETPs. While demand from institutional and retail investors has pushed issuers like CoinShares to expand their product offerings beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum into assets like Zcash, the back-office plumbing required to support such instruments has not always kept pace. Settlement infrastructure, which operates largely out of public view, has become a quiet bottleneck for product launches across the continent.
For CoinShares, the delay is a setback but not necessarily a signal of deeper trouble. The company retains the ability to launch once the CSD confirms it can support the required operations. Still, the episode underscores a recurring tension in the crypto ETP space: regulatory and financial market appetite is expanding faster than the legacy settlement systems designed to service it.
