Gold Surges, Yen Slides as Iran Tensions Drive Oil Higher
Commodity markets surged Monday as Iran-US standoff pushed oil up 5% and gold near record highs, while the yen reversed intervention gains.
Monday's session delivered a clear message from markets: geopolitical risk is back in the driver's seat. WTI crude climbed nearly $3.90 to $82.08 per barrel — a gain of roughly 5% — as traders assessed the widening standoff between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz. With President Trump signaling a pivot from military threats toward a blockade strategy, and Iran reportedly intent on keeping oil flows through the Strait disrupted, the standoff now looks more like a slow-burn economic siege than a quick resolution. Both sides face mounting costs the longer this persists.
Gold mirrored oil's strength, recovering sharply from intraday lows around $4,313 to settle near $4,388 — a gain of $46 on the session. The rally reflects a convergence of factors: a softer-than-expected U.S. jobs report on Friday, the dollar's relative weakness as U.S. authorities attempt to manage currency levels, and the uncertainty premium that open-ended geopolitical conflicts tend to inject into haven assets. The price action suggests gold bulls remain firmly in control.

The Japanese yen was the session's clearest casualty in currency markets. USD/JPY surged more than 150 pips, breaking through the 159.00 level in U.S. trading hours and erasing a substantial portion of the gains won through what appeared to be coordinated intervention by Tokyo and Washington. The pair's resilience despite that intervention effort signals the limits of verbal and even financial deterrence when underlying dollar demand is firm. Japanese officials will face immediate pressure to respond when Tokyo markets open.
Elsewhere, equities struggled to find direction. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, weighed partly by early reports of a $500 billion structured finance loan arranged for Nvidia as part of the hyperscaler AI infrastructure buildout — a deal that, if confirmed, could rank among the largest private fundraises ever recorded. Initial details rattled Nvidia shares, underscoring how even bullish long-term narratives can create short-term uncertainty. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields edged higher to 4.70%, reflecting ongoing tension between inflation caution and growth concerns.
