Apple Plans Foldable iPhone and Ultra Model for 2026-2027

Apple is preparing one of its most ambitious iPhone expansions in years, with at least five new models slated for release between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027. The rollout includes the company's long-anticipated first foldable iPhone, for which Apple is targeting an initial production run of approximately 10 million units — a figure that signals serious commercial intent rather than a cautious market test.
At the other end of the product spectrum, Apple is also planning to introduce an iPhone Ultra, a move that would push the lineup into territory previously reserved for its Apple Watch branding. The Ultra designation implies a device positioned above the existing Pro Max tier, giving Apple a clearer hierarchy at the premium end of the market where margin pressure from Android rivals has been intensifying.

Perhaps the most consequential — and politically charged — element of the expansion involves Apple's supply chain strategy. That decision carries both reputational and regulatory risk at a moment when US-China tech tensions remain elevated, and it suggests Apple is willing to absorb political friction in order to secure component availability at scale.
The strategic logic here is straightforward even if the execution is complicated: Apple needs to hit aggressive volume targets on new form factors while keeping its supply chain from becoming a bottleneck. Foldables in particular are memory-intensive devices, which explains why chip sourcing has become a pressure point even before the product launches. Whether the Pentagon blacklist exposure translates into regulatory blowback — or simply becomes another managed risk in Apple's sprawling supplier network — remains an open question as the 2026 launch window approaches.
